Baltimore Symphony Academy - a Violin2Viola partner
In 2023, Violin2Viola teamed up with the BSO Academy to provide an in-person experience for violinists interested in trying viola. Participants from as far away as Arizona, Indiana, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, and more came to Baltimore for an exciting weekend of workshops at the BSO's home, the Joseph Meyerhoff Symphony Hall.
In 2024, Violin2Viola is going to look a little different. We are offering a two-part learning experience in partnership with BSO Academy and other organizations. Participants will first complete the V2V online workshop* on March 3, 2024 (additional dates TBD). Participants in the V2V workshop may then apply to partner organizations such as BSO Academy. If they are also accepted into BSO Academy 2024 as violinists, they will allow V2V workshop participants to incorporate viola into their summer experience at BSO Academy. This may include playing viola on a piece or two in the orchestra, playing viola in a chamber music group, or participating in a viola-oriented breakout group - these experiences will be at the discretion of BSO Academy and the participant's interest in viola experiences.
Most BSO Academy participants are amateur adult musicians who experience a week-long side-by-side with the BSO. However, we had several college students and professional violinists participate in the V2V workshop last year. Following up with a week in the Academy is a great way for anyone from college students to amateurs to professional violinists put their new viola skills to the test in an encouraging and high-level environment.
*All official Violin2Viola programs are sponsored by Shar Music. They generously provide free trial violas to all participants who need one for the duration of the workshop.
How to sign up:
Please go to the BSO Academy website to apply for the Violin2Viola weekend workshop by mid-January, but they will usually accept applications as late as March if there are still openings. You do not need to apply as a viola player unless you intend to play viola only at BSO Academy.
