Violin2Viola at Luzerne Music Center
Who:
Violin2Viola at Luzerne Music Center is intended for violin students who are interested in exploring or switching to the viola, and/or viola players who may have previously switched from violin, but perhaps never received a strong foundation in viola or who take lessons with someone who is primarily a violin teacher. The Violin2Viola workshop at Luzerne Music Center is a learning opportunity for students ages 9-15 who are accepted to the Luzerne Music Center Junior or Junior B Sessions.
What:
The Violin2Viola workshop at Luzerne will be a daily 1-hour workshop offered during the Luzerne Music Center Junior B Session programming. Violas will be provided for students during the workshop by our sponsor, Shar Music.
Where:
This workshop will take place at the Luzerne Music Center.
When/How:
V2V will provide one hour of daily group instruction in addition to LMC's regular programming during the period from July 4-8, 2023. (LMC's program dates are longer than those dates.) For an extra fee, students will have the option to take a private lesson with a V2V instructor if desired. To be eligible for this workshop, you will have had to apply to Luzerne Music Center by their deadline of March 15, 2023 and accepted into their junior session. Sign-up for the V2V workshop will take place via the Luzerne Music Center website for accepted students. See the Luzerne Music Center website for details on how to audition for their summer program and then subsequently sign up for the Violin2Viola workshop.
Why:
Violin players might be interested in this workshop because they may be attracted to the beautiful sound of the viola; be intrigued by the different challenges that come with playing an inner voice rather than the melody; recognize a need for strong viola students in their school orchestra, youth orchestra, or chamber music ensemble; may enjoy playing in a smaller section or having greater opportunity for leadership roles; may be thinking about a career in music and recognize that the ability to double also doubles your opportunities as a future musician and teacher; may desire greater opportunities for scholarships since viola players are in demand; simple curiosity; or any reason a student might like.
Viola players who previously switched from violin may feel they don't really understand how to get a good viola tone, or even what it should sound like; may not feel fluent reading alto clef; may feel physically awkward or uncomfortable playing the viola and want to figure out a better set-up; may feel unfamiliar with the wide variety and beauty of viola solo and chamber music repertoire; or may be confused about other differences between violin and viola.
This workshop should help begin to answer your questions about all things Viola. Learn about Luzerne Music Center in the video below!
