Violin2Viola at Boston University Tanglewood Institute (BUTI)
Who:
Violin2Viola is intended for violin students who are interested in exploring or switching to viola and/or viola students who may have already switched from violin, but perhaps never received a strong foundation in viola or who take lessons with someone who is primarily a violin teacher. The V2V mini workshop at BUTI is a learning opportunity for students ages 15-18 who are accepted to the BUTI Young Artists Orchestra. The audition process for BUTI is very competitive.
What:
The Violin2Viola mini workshop at BUTI will be a FREE 2 1/2-hour mini workshop offered during the YAO programming. For an extra fee, students will have the option to take a private lesson with a V2V instructor if desired. Violas will be brought by the V2V instructors for students' use during the workshop and lessons. The instruments are provided by our sponsor, Shar Music.
Where:
This workshop will take place at the BUTI campus, taught by Nana Vaughn.
When:
This workshop will take place during the YAO program. To be eligible for the V2V workshop, you will have had to apply to BUTI by their deadline and and be accepted into their Young Artists Orchestra program. See the BUTI website for details on how to audition for BUTI's summer programs. Because the 2024 V2V mini workshop is a relatively short clinic and is open only to accepted students, you may or may not see info about V2V on the BUTI website this time. Sign-up for the V2V mini workshop will take place once you arrive on campus, close to the date of the event. The BUTI application deadline is January 25, 2024 (accepted after the deadline as space allows only.)
Why:
Violin players might be interested in this mini workshop because they may be attracted to the beautiful sound of the viola; be intrigued by the different challenges that come with playing an inner voice rather than the melody; recognize a need for strong viola students in their school orchestra, youth orchestra, or chamber music ensemble; may enjoy playing in a smaller section or having greater opportunity for leadership roles; may be thinking about a career in music and recognize that the ability to double also doubles your opportunities as a future musician and teacher; may desire greater opportunities for scholarships since viola players are in demand; simple curiosity; or any reason a student might like.
Viola players who previously switched from violin may feel they don't really understand how to get a good viola tone, or even what it should sound like and how it differs from violin; may not feel fluent reading alto clef; may feel physically awkward or uncomfortable playing the viola and want to figure out a better set-up; may feel unfamiliar with the wide variety and beauty of viola solo and chamber music repertoire; or may be confused about other differences between violin and viola.
This mini workshop should start you in the right direction toward answering your questions about all things Viola.
