Luzerne Music Center - a Violin2Viola partner
In 2023, Violin2Viola teamed up with the Luzerne Music Center to provide an in-person experience for violinists interested in trying viola. Nana Vaughn provided a week-long workshop at LMC to registered campers.
In 2024, Violin2Viola is going to look a little different. We are offering a two-part learning experience in partnership with Luzerne Music Center and other organizations. Participants will first complete the V2V online workshop* on March 3, 2024 (additional dates TBD). Participants in the V2V workshop may then apply to partner organizations such as LMC. If they are also accepted into LMC 2024 as violinists, LMC will allow V2V workshop participants to incorporate viola into their summer experience at Luzerne. The audition process for LMC is competitive.
Following up the V2V online workshop with some summer viola experiences at LMC is a great way for student violinists to put their new viola skills to the test in an encouraging and high-level environment. This may include playing viola on a piece or two in the orchestra, taking a viola lesson with the LMC viola faculty, or playing viola in a chamber music group - this will be at the discretion of LMC and the participant's interest in viola experiences.
V2V faculty will not be visiting LMC in person this summer; we'll just be doing the online workshop in March. However, V2V online workshop participants may have an opportunity to take viola lessons with the LMC viola faculty.
*All official Violin2Viola residencies are sponsored by Shar Music. They generously provide free trial violas to all participants who need one for the duration of the workshop.
How to sign up:
First, apply to the Violin2Viola online workshop by Feb 18, 2024. Then go to the Luzerne Music Center website to apply for their summer program by March 15, 2024. You do not need to apply as a viola player unless you intend to play only viola at LMC.
Why:
Violin players might be interested in this educational opportunity because they may be attracted to the beautiful sound of the viola; be intrigued by the different challenges that come with playing an inner voice rather than the melody; recognize a need for strong viola students in their school orchestra, youth orchestra, or chamber music ensemble; may enjoy playing in a smaller section or having greater opportunity for leadership roles; may be thinking about a career in music and recognize that the ability to double also doubles your opportunities as a future musician and teacher; may desire greater opportunities for scholarships since viola players are in demand; simple curiosity; or any reason a student might like.
Viola players who previously switched from violin may feel they don't really understand how to get a good viola tone, or even what it should sound like; may not feel fluent reading alto clef; may feel physically awkward or uncomfortable playing the viola and want to figure out a better set-up; may feel unfamiliar with the wide variety and beauty of viola solo and chamber music repertoire; or may be confused about other differences between violin and viola.
This workshop should help begin to answer your questions about all things Viola. Learn about Luzerne Music Center in the video below!
